Carlos Alcaraz was the new exciting player in tennis last year but this year he's an established superstar with Mats Wilander calling him the most exciting player to ever walk a tennis court.
That's quite a statement to make about a game that has had so many legendary players but there is some merit to it. Alcaraz does play with a lot of aggression, so much so that actually in the era of aggressive tennis he sticks out quite a bit. That and an ability to hit some amazing shots only contribute to him being a crowd magnet.
Over the years we've seen the likes of Del Potro, Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and others excite fans around the world though for Wilander it's Alcaraz who takes the top spot among all of them. It's very high praise:
“The anticipation level of people when they watch Carlos Alcaraz play - I have never experienced another tennis player where the fans are so enthusiastic about a tennis player, whether it's a male player or a female player. To me, Carlos Alcaraz seems to be the most exciting tennis player that has ever walked on a tennis court, and maybe more so because we don't really know if he's going to be a great champion or he's going to be stuck maybe just winning the US Open once.”
Alcaraz's clay season includes a trophy which is the same as last year's prep however he seems quite a bit more mature now. Despite an shocking loss in Rome, Wilander deems his prep for Roland Garros as perfect:
“For Carlos Alcaraz, I think the preparation actually is perfect. Rome wasn't that great, but he lost because his opponent hit unbelievably hard and played a great match because he [Alcaraz] won in Barcelona and in Madrid. I think [his] confidence is very high. He has [had] about two weeks, maybe even slightly more to rest before he starts."
