Stan Wawrinka played a pretty good match overall but faltered as the match went on to lose against
Alexander Bublik 6-3 5-7 2-6.
The start of the match telegraphed that this would be quite a bumpy affair for both players and it kind of was. Bublik and Wawrinka exchanged breaks in the first two games but troubles continued mounting for Bublik who could not buy a first serve. Wawrinka used that to his advantage and won the opening set with 6-3 as Bublik was totally disconnected from the match.
Eventually, the player from Kazakhstan started finding his rhythm more and more and despite some questionable choices, he was able to keep himself in the match early in the 2nd set when Wawrinka pressed for a break. Bublik had break points himself and a very good opportunity came at 5-4 for him with several set points but Wawrinka survived.
Eventually, the Swiss player faltered a bit more and he dropped the 2nd set with 5-7. Things got much worse in the final set as Wawrinka faltered even more with Bublik looking more and more comfortable. Errors started piling up and Bublik jumped out to a double break lead 5-1. Bublik had a match point at 5-1 but Wawrinka saved it and broke him for 5-2 but Bublik finished it off with 6-2.
