Despite a couple of excellent results in the previous season's closing stages,
Alexander Zverev and
David Ferrer will not collaborate again in 2021, as the Spanish veteran confirmed.
Zverev and Ferrer started to work together in July, and the Spaniard guided the German into the first Major final in New York, although he wasn't there with him in New York. Alexander barely missed a chance of winning the first Major title, serving for the win against Dominic Thiem and falling in five sets. David and Alexander were on the court together for the first time at Roland Garros.
The youngster played well after that, winning back-to-back Cologne ATP 250 titles and reaching the Paris Masters final following a triumph over Rafael Nadal. Ferrer will not travel with Alexander in 2021, focusing on his family and the Barcelona Open, being a tournament director.
"I had to decide by the end of the year; I spoke to Alexander and told him that I preferred not to continue working with him in 2021. There wasn't a particular reason or anything; I just thought the time wasn't right. Everything is fine between us, and I'm grateful to Alexander for the opportunity he gave me to travel with him in the closing stages of the season. We had a good run during those three months.
It wasn't easy for me to continue traveling with Alexander due to the coronavirus and the fact that I'm the Barcelona Open tournament director. There's also my family, which I put above everything. I'm not the right person to help Alexander at the moment. In the future, I will work as a coach again, that's for sure," David Ferrer said.
