Alexander Zverev (No. 5) defeated Borna Coric (No. 34) 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the Madrid Open. The 4th seed showcased his impressive clay-court prowess after a disappointing loss last week at the BMW Munich Open against Christian Garin, who was outside the top-100. His next opponent will be the Canadian Denis Shapovalov (No. 132).
The start of the first set was evenly matched with both players holding strong service games. With the score tied at 2-2, Zverev had the first break points of the match, providing a glimpse of what was to come. However, Coric navigated through the tough moment and went ahead 3-2.
Nevertheless, Sascha did not let up. With a 70% first-serve percentage and winning 86% of those points, he became nearly unstoppable for Coric on the return. Not only that, but the Croatian's doubts were reflected in a lower first-serve percentage and several new opportunities for the German. Zverev won four consecutive games, including two breaks, to take the first set 6-3 in 48 minutes.
In the beginning of the second set, Coric couldn't significantly reduce the gap from the final games of the previous set. While the Croatian improved in his service games, he still struggled to find solutions on the return and constantly found himself under pressure during long rallies initiated by Zverev.
With the score tied at 2-2 again, Zverev entered into a streak of consecutive games, securing two breaks and offering no chances on his own serve. He comfortably closed out the match 6-3, 6-2. Zverev reached 50 victories in Masters 1000 tournaments on clay, and his next opponent will be Denis Shapovalov.
