Alexander Zverev is one step closer to claiming his maiden grass court title. The two-time
Halle Open finalist will finally aim to snap the duck and the title that has long eluded him during his career so far. He saw off
Arthur Fils 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 in the Quarter-Finals.
After a slow start, he raised his level in the second set breaking Fils at 3-2 with a run of winning eight consecutive points. Zverev charged forward and asserted his dominance for the rest of the match after losing the opening set narrowly in the tie-break.
The rain started to fall but unlike Berlin in the WTA event happening there this week, Halle has a roof and it was closed for the decider. Zverev charged to victory from there narrowly sealing the next set 6-4 winning 83% of his first-serve points. He was not broken over the span of two hours and 30 minutes and now sits at 2-0 over Fils in their Head to Head.
Despite never winning the tournament, Zverev who is now 37-10 for the season is the first player since Roger Federer to reach back-to-back semi-finals in Halle. He sits at 18-7 for the tournament and will look to finally snap the hoodoo with the title that has long eluded his grasp. Up next for the Roland Garros finalist is Hubert Hurkacz who earlier saw off Marcos Giron 7-6, 6-4 after hitting 42 winners including 11 aces. The Pole is into his third semi-final of the season and is now sat at a career high of World No.7 in the live rankings. He will aim to crush the dreams of Zverev for another year in the tournament.
Won by Alexander Bublik last year, the other two ties see Jannik Sinner faces Jan-Lennard Struff and Zhizhen Zhang faces Christopher Eubanks so we could yet get Sinner v Zverev in the final.
