Germany’s tennis star
Alexander Zverev will return to defend
his title at the
Hamburg European Open in 2024. The competition will be played
in the summer.
The development was confirmed by the 26-year-old in a statement
where he expressed his excitement to be playing in the competition once again. “I'm so excited to come back. It's a very
special place for me," he said: "Hamburg is my birthplace, and this
is where I started playing tennis."
In the 2023 edition, the Hamburg-born went on to win the
title after beating Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the final with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
It was one of his two ATP titles this year. The other title came in Chengdu
where he defeated Russia’s Roman Safiullin in the final with a score of 6-7, 7-6,
6-3.
Zverev had an impressive end to his 2023 campaign where he
took part in the ATP Finals in Turin. He ended up failing to qualify for the
semifinal despite winning two out of the three matches. He defeated Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz in the first group match of the tournament with a score of 6-7,
6-3, 6-4.
He then went on the get the better of Russia’s Andrey Rublev
in straight sets as well with a score of 6-4, 6-4. His only defeat in the
competition came against the world number three Daniil Medvedev who won in straight
sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4.
World number eight Denmark’s Holger Rune has also been confirmed as a
participant in the Hamburg European Open in 2024.
