Alexander Zverev is the first semifinalist at the 2021
Roland Garros after defeating
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 3-0.
The German player was rather swift in his victory over the Spaniard taking under two hours to defeat him 6-4 6-1 6-1. The first set was a very entertaining one as the players traded breaks in the first two games. Those were the first two of 7 total breaks we saw in the opening set. Fokina had the lead twice but each time Zverev pulled it back.
Zverev served for the set at 5-3 but Fokina broke him to make it 5-4. However, he could not win his service game and Zverev escaped with the first one 6-4. Fokina was starting to feel tired after several long matches so he tried shortening the points. Those resulted in a high number of unforced errors allowing Zverev to take control of the match.
The German won the 2nd set with 6-1 and it was the start of the end for Davidovich Fokina who never really got back into the match. He continued to play and fight but Zverev was clearly the better player so he took a quick lead and held it before closing out the match with 6-1.
