Alexander Zverev will not play for Germany in Davis Cup

Alexander Zverev confirmed he won't take part in the Davis Cup at the end of the season citing a need to get some rest.

Alexander Zverev won the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo securing only the 2nd singles medal for Germany in tennis. The German received a warm welcome back home in his native Hamburg being greeted by many fans and the town's mayor. Despite all of that Zverev won't play for Germany at the Davis Cup in November.

His decision was motivated by the fact that he barely gets time to rest with the long and excruciating season which is a fair point. Zverev elected to skip over the National Bank Open in Montreal to recover from the gruelling conditions he faced in Tokyo.

He explained the Davis Cup decision with:

"I'm only human and I need a holiday. We play from January to October and I won't play in November."

Even so, Zverev confirmed that he is open to playing for Germany in the competition in the future especially if the format was to change to the old one. Zverev is not a fan of the new format:

"As soon as there is the old format again, with home advantage and matches at the weekend, I'm in."
