Alexander Zverev defeated Karan Khachanov 6-3 6-1 in the
Olympic Games final to win the gold medal.
The final of the Men's Olympic Games tennis tournament went largely as expected as Alexander Zverev achieved his career highlight. The German justified the heavy favourite mantle against Khachanov by defeating him in straight sets and winning the gold medal.
The start of the match featured a very determined Alexander Zverev who asserted himself as the aggressor early. He did not wait for Khachanovic to take control of points but rather initiated winners himself. That worked as he took an early break which he held for the rest of the set.
He added another to finish off the first set with 6-3 before riding that momentum early in the 2nd. He once again took the early lead and never looked back winning the 2nd set with 6-1. Zverev was clearly the better player whose serve worked which minimalized chances for Khachanov.
Zverev was also stronger from the baseline producing consistently power and precision. Khachanov tried to counter with more aggression in the 2nd set but that resulted in more errors than winners and that was the end of it.
