Belinda Bencic failed to win a double medal at the Tokyo Olympics as
Barbora Krejcikova and
Katerina Siniakova proved better in the final 7-5 6-1.
French Open doubles champions Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova are now Olympic medallists as the Czech duo defeated Swiss duo Bencic and Golubic in the Women's doubles final. A dream season for Krejcikova continues with another big achievment and the Czech player is filling out an impressive resume at age 25.
The start of the set featured a very strong play by both but Bencic and Golubic had an early break point which they failed to use. That was the only break point for the majority of the set as we did not see one until very late. At 5-5, Krejcikova and Siniakova forced two and used one of them.
They then proceeded to end the set with 7-5 coming very close to another tennis medal for the Czech Republic. The start of the 2nd set featured brilliant play from the Czech pairing as their experience and familiarity with each other proved key.
The Grand Slam-winning duo took two early break and a 3-0 lead before the Swiss pair pulled one back. However, the Czech players added another one taking the 5-1 lead before closing it out with 6-1. A deserved win for one of the best doubles pairings in the world.
