The captain of Team Stripes, Frances Tiafoe will be the first player to step on the court on Friday in the match against Sam Querrey. The matches during the first-day count only for one point, however, the competition promises also a lot of action on Day 1.
Querrey and Tiafoe met twice on the ATP Tour and the more experienced player from Team Stripes didn't lose a single set to Tiafoe in any of the matches. First, he triumphed in Shanghai back in 2017 and then he got a three-set victory at the Roland Garros in 2018.
In the second match of the day, the youngest player from Team Stripes, Tennys Sandgren will take on the oldest player from Team Stars, Tommy Paul. Although Paul triumphed twice against Sandgren in 2019, the recent form during ATP Tour suspension speaks differently. The 28-years-old American recently played at the Altec Styslinger Tennis Exhibition where he didn't find a player to beat him. On the other hand, Tommy Paul played the UTR Pro Match Series back in May and he didn't win in any of the 4 matches he played.
The evening session, which will kick-off at 6 p.m. (ET) will feature the two highest-ranked American players. World number 21, John Isner will take on no. 24, Taylor Fritz. Both players got two victories from the 4 meetings on the ATP Tour and so fans in Atlanta can expect a good match to kick-off the evening session.
Steve Johnson and Reilly Opelka will meet in the last match of the day. Opelka defeated Johnson a few days ago at the Altec Styslinger Tennis Exhibition as his opponent didn't win a set in any of his last 5 exhibition matches.
