Kevin Anderson is another player who has spoken out during the quarantine in Australia but his stance was different from the norm.
The South African player who is one of the players quarantining ahead of the Australian Open in Melbourne urged his fellow players to have more patience. As many as 72 players have been quarantining ahead of the events in Australia and many voiced their disappointment with the strict rules.
Anderson who is currently the head of ATP Player Council said:
“From the players perspective I really hope that they can see what’s going on, and from the community, you know they at least forgive the players who have said things and understand that."
Anderson understands that many comments come from frustration due to the ongoing pandemic but he was not alone in calling for a more measured approach. Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari said:
“I’m so grateful that you guys allowed us to come into your country while you were not allowing anyone else to come in."
The situation is ongoing but it is pretty clear that the Victorian Government will not back down from their measures meaning that the players will undergo the full quarantine period. What sort of effect will that have on the Australian Open remains to be seen.
