Andrey Rublev became the 2nd player to openly criticize the current ATP rankings system after Alexander Zverev who criticized it recently.
Because of the pandemic, the ATP introduced a revised ranking system which calculated the rankings after they were practically frozen for 5 months during the shutdown. The revised system for calculating rankings was this month extended until the week of August 9 and the ATP anticipates that the traditional process with points dropping off on a 52-week basis will restart after that. After Zverev criticized it several days ago, Andrey Rublev spoke on it as well saying:
"If we would have the normal system, I would be like No.4 in the world I think. So what do you think is better for me, to be No.8 or No.4?"
His comments were made after he was asked about Zverev's earlier comments. The assessment by both players is a fair one but there were outspoken players calling for the rankings to be frozen as well. So it's a tough argument but for Rublev, there was a clear conclusion:
"With the system that we're having now, for me, it's much tougher to be No.4, so here is the answer."
