Andrey Rublev secured a straight-sets victory against Ugo Humbert, 6-2, 6-3, in the quarter-finals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters 2023. The World No. 6 has performed exceptionally well throughout his time at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena. So far, he has defeated Quentin Halys, Adrian Mannarino, and Tommy Paul without dropping a set.
In his quarter-final clash against Humbert, Rublev continued this feat against the third French player that he has faced at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament. This came after the thirty-second seed ousted the Russian in the Round of 16 at the China Open just last week after a tight three-set battle.
Rublev dominates opening set
From the beginning of the match, it was clear that Rublev wanted revenge for last week's defeat in Beijing. The 26-year-old broke Humbert in his second service game and looked confident as he held to secure it.
They then went to a deuce in the Frenchman's next service game, giving Rublev a chance for a double break while Humbert tried desperately to keep up with the fifth seed. After going back and forth on the advantage for a while, Rublev got his third break point of the game and cleared the ball past Humbert to clinch the double break.
While Humbert was able to hold the next time around, it was too late to stop his opponent from serving for the set. Ultimately, Rublev ran away with the opener as he achieved a 40-0 hold.
Humbert fights back in second set
The second set was much more closely contested. At first, it looked as though Rublev would sail through it as he broke Humbert in his second service game once again. However, the World No. 34 fought back to take Rublev's next service game to a deuce, from where he was able to break back and thus level the set.
Shortly afterward, Humbert found himself in with a chance of going up a break, but Rublev stood firm to edge through the game and hold. Following this, Rublev was able to get another break point of his own, which he successfully converted after a strong forehand forced Humbert to hit the ball into the net.
Humbert's final service game of the match then proceeded to go to a deuce, where Rublev won the advantage before converting match point in order to book his place in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters.
