Murray looked like his pre-surgery self at the start of the match, keeping pace with Tiafoe as both men battled from the baseline. With no breaks of serve in the first set, a tiebreak ensued, during which Tiafoe was the more consistent player as he obtained the vital mini-break and never looked back.
The second set saw a spent Murray struggling to match his opponent's speed and power, with Tiafoe racing to a quick 5-1 lead. However, the World No.51 was unable to serve out the match, handing Murray a break back and an opportunity at survival. Regardless, It was to no avail as although the three-time Grand Slam champion managed to hold serve, Tiafoe made no mistake the second time, ending the match after an hour and 50 minutes.
Awaiting Tiafoe in the round of 16 is the winner between Brazilian Thiago Monteiro and lucky loser Eduardo Nava, who replaced David Goffin as the second seed withdrew due to a left knee injury.
