Andy Murray recently revealed he was open to representing Great Britain in the
Davis Cup finals if he was nominated but it did not happen as the final spot went to Liam Broady.
Andy Murray never mentioned the Davis Cup as an objective in his 2021 season plans but recently the British player revealed he would be willing to play for his nation once again. Murray started playing better tennis during the autumn when his results improved in North America. He was able to build upon that and play some good tennis during the indoor season in Europe to finish off his season.
That prompted many to question whether Murray would be nominated as part of Team GB for the Davis Cup finals. Asked about it Murray revealed he could be talked into it:
“Never say never, maybe I could be convinced to play. When I was getting asked about it, I had six weeks in a row planned. I am not young, I need to rest as well. When I have played, the Davis Cup has always been physically very demanding. At times I’ve played matches when I probably shouldn’t have. There were many times when I was younger where I had injuries and the team and everyone knew about that and sort of made me play."
Well, it was not meant to be as Murray was left out of the team in the final list of captain Leon Smith. Whether Murray was invited and declined is not known however the final team consists of Norrie, Evans, Broady, Skupski, and Salisbury. Broady was the final nomination revealed today.
