After two Biella Challengers, the three-time Major champion Andy Murray will play his first ATP tournament of the season at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier after taking a wild card.
The Open Sud de France in Montpellier had moved to this city in 2010 when the organizers bought the Lyon license. The French players had much success in the first seven editions, with three titles for Richard Gasquet and two for Gael Monfils. The home players were beaten six times in the finals, including 2017, when Alexander Zverev stole the show in front of Gasquet.
Lucas Pouille, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils are the most recent winners, with Tsonga and Monfils returning to action next week. Roberto Bautista Agut and David Goffin are the top seeds, and Andy Murray will try to spoil their party after asking for an invitation.
Skipping the Australian Open, Andy kicked off the season with the Biella 1 Challenger final, losing to Ilya Marchenko 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and a half. The Briton will compete in Biella again this week before heading to Montpellier for his Open Sud de France debut.
Andy is currently ranked 125th after playing only seven matches in 2020 due to a pelvic injury.
