Only days after playing for three hours in Sydney, Murray and Basilashvili did the same in Melbourne and once again it was the Brit who won 6-1 3-6 6-4 6-7(5) 6-4.
Once again it was a very hard battle that lasted well over three hours down under between Murray and Basilashvili. This time they played 5 sets instead of three but once again it was Andy Murray who emerged as the victor. They both put forward a very high level of tennis early on in the match but Murray was in complete control.
Misfiring often Basilashvili lost the opening set with 6-1 but his level got much better as time went on. He proved it by coming out more focused and precise in the second set ultimately winning it 6-3. The 3rd set was a crucial one for both and they played like it. Murray was a bit better and edged out his opponent 6-4 to take a 2-1 lead in sets.
The 4th set was played better by Basilashvili who eventually found a breakthrough and took a 4-2 lead. Murray was able to storm back and make it 4-4 but in the end, it had to be settled in the tiebreak. Basilashvili jumped out to an early lead in it with some stellar shotmaking and forced a decider with 7-5. In the decider, it was Murray who was on top early.
He complicated things late a little bit by losing his advantage but rallied to win it 6-4. A very good performance by both but Murray was able to find a higher level even under to constant pressure of Basilashvili's forehand. If Murray can keep this level he might find himself in the 2nd week.
