World No. 5 Casper Ruud lost in his debut at Indian Wells to local Marcos Giron in a tough 7-6[4], 3-6, 6-2 battle, marking the best win of Giron’s career. The American claims his 5th top-10 victory, though this is his first win over a top-5 player.
Casper Ruud had withdrawn from the Mexican Open a couple of weeks ago due to food poisoning, pulling out before facing local Rodrigo Pacheco. This time, he struggled primarily due to constant errors in a erratic performance. The 3-time Grand Slam finalist hit 8 double faults and won only 33% of the points on his second serve.
Ruud became the second top-5 player to exit the tournament in the first round, after top seed Alexander Zverev was eliminated in the opening round. Both were in the same half of the draw, opening up opportunities in the top-half.
The former world No. 2 posted a 61% first serve percentage, winning 77% of those points, but it wasn’t enough given the missed opportunities throughout the match. He only converted 3 of 11 break points (27%), while Giron converted 3/7 (43%).
The American took the first set after 1 hour and 25 minutes, in a match that lasted 2 hours and 41 minutes. Giron advances to the third round of Indian Wells for the first time and will face 2024 Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin (26th), who defeated Zizou Bergs in the second round.
