Racket smashed, ATP Finals at risk: Arthur Fils crashes out of Shanghai Masters - “I don’t know if it’s Turin or the end of the season”

Arthur Fils had two reasons to be frustrated in Shanghai: a painful defeat and a growing threat to his ATP Finals ambitions. The Frenchman smashed two rackets during his third-round loss to Botic van de Zandschulp, then admitted that the pressure of the season's closing weeks might be catching up with him, even if he was not ready to blame his defeat on it.

The world No. 11 went down 7-5, 6-4 to the Dutchman, ranked 41st, ending his campaign after receiving a first-round bye and beating Pavel Kotov in his opener. Fils lost his serve late in the first set before destroying his racket against the court, with a second outburst following in the next set as van de Zandschulp completed the upset.

It was another setback in a difficult period for the Frenchman, who looked ready to establish himself among the Tour's leading contenders after winning his first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati. Since then, he has lost in the first round of the US Open, reached the Tokyo quarterfinals and now departed Shanghai earlier than expected.

Fils had also endured an unusual experience in Tokyo, where a registration delay forced him to play qualifying despite having recently entered the top 10. He recovered from that embarrassment to make a quarterfinal run, but his latest defeat means he heads into the final stretch of the season with little margin for error in the Race to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.

Fils reflects on frustration after Shanghai exit

After the defeat, Fils was asked whether the fight to reach Turin and the pressure of the season's conclusion had affected him. His answer was measured, suggesting that the result was not necessarily a symptom of a wider problem, even if several factors had contributed to the frustration.

“I don’t know if it’s Turin or the end of the season, it’s a bit of everything. I don’t necessarily feel pressure, but there are matches, sometimes, that’s just how it is, where it doesn’t happen,” he said after the match. “I could have played the match ten times, maybe I would have won it eight times. But it didn’t go my way.”

Van de Zandschulp proved more effective in the decisive moments, breaking late in the first set and maintaining his advantage in the second. The Dutchman used the quick Shanghai conditions effectively and prevented Fils from consistently dictating rallies, turning the match into another disappointing result for the Frenchman after his Cincinnati breakthrough.

The defeat also matters because of the points at stake in the Race to Turin. Before Shanghai, Fils sat seventh with 3,285 points, holding a 255-point advantage over Daniil Medvedev, who occupied eighth place with 3,030. With the top eight in the Race normally securing qualification, that buffer leaves Fils in a strong position but far from comfortable with several tournaments still to come.

Medvedev has already advanced to the fourth round in Shanghai and can close the gap with a deeper run. Reaching the semifinals would give the Russian enough points to potentially move ahead of Fils, depending on the final points calculations. Alex de Minaur and Rafael Jodar are also pursuing qualification, with both still competing in Shanghai and capable of gaining ground as the tournament progresses.

Fils still has opportunities to recover lost ground, but his calendar is becoming increasingly important. His next stop is the Brussels ATP 250, which begins on October 19, followed by the Basel ATP 500 and the Paris Masters, the final Masters 1000 event of the season.

Those three tournaments give the Frenchman a final chance to strengthen his position before the ATP Finals field is settled. Brussels offers an immediate opportunity to rebuild confidence, while Basel and Paris provide bigger stages and more ranking points for players capable of making deep runs. Any further early exits, by contrast, could make qualification substantially harder.
