World number five and German tennis star
Alexander Zverev
was left fuming with the chair umpire with the conditions during the ongoing
ATP event in Munich. The 26-year-old suffered a rather surprising defeat in the
quarterfinal of the BMW Open to Chile’s Cristian Garín with a score of 6-4,
6-4.
During the match, Zverev was furious when the chair umpire
decided to let the match carry on despite the rain, something which is not a usual
occurrence. “At what point are we gonna do something? At what point? Just tell
me,” he said. “Are we not gonna do anything the entire match? Then I’m done.
I’m just gonna tank the next two games and I’m done. This is ridiculous. It’s
been literally raining.”
The result would be seen as another opportunity lost by Zverev
to win silverware this season. It was his fifth defeat in the quarterfinal or
beyond of an event in the 2024 season. Previously, he was knocked out of the
quarterfinal at Indian Wells when he lost world number three Carlos Alcaraz with
a score of 6-3, 6-1. That’s not it as he was also knocked out of the semifinal
of three events — the Australian Open, Los Cabos Opena and the Miami Open.
