Australian Open champions and ATP Doubles Race leaders Kyrgios and Kokkinakis started off their
Miami Open campaign with a win over Gonzalez/Molteni 6-2 6-7(5) 10-6.
Thanasi Kokkinakis and
Nick Kyrgios are great mates in their personal life and that chemistry has been transforming onto the courts this year. After a brilliant run at the Australian Open earlier, the duo continues to play doubles events together and they have been rather good. They are leading the race so far and while they probably won't finish as number one, Kyrgios admitted it would be fun to play in Turin.
One step towards the goal was made today when they kicked off their Miami Open campaign with a strong win. It was a typical match from them as their dominated on their serve rather easily. After taking an early break they sort of cruise in the opening set to a 6-2 finish. Things went well in the 2nd at least initially.
The duo was up a break and it seemed like they would finish it off without any complications. However, complications arose when they lost their serve at 4-3 to make it 4-4. Eventually, we ended up in a tiebreak where Kyrgios and Kokkinakis lost their focus a little bit. A couple of mistakes and the set was gone as their opponents won it with 7-5.
The match tiebreak followed and Kyrgios and Kokkinakis rallied quite a bit and finished it off with a very strong performance in the 16 points that it took to win it. The Special K's move on to the next round.
