A serious incident happened during the Jenson Brooksby and Federico Coria match in Miami as the young American threw his racquet after one rally hitting the ball boy.
It happened in the 3rd set when Brooksby was up 4-1 with the match clearly in his control. He lost his nerve after missing a serve tossing the racquet in a very dangerous manner. It bounced all the way to the ball kid that tried to avoid it but was unable. It ultimately hit him and umpire Carlos Bernardes gave Brooksby a point penalty. Check it out below.
Coria objected to the punishment calling for the umpire to default Brooksby but he refused. His reasoning was that the ball kid was not injured and offered to ask the ball kid himself. Coria was not happy about it and argued for a default a bit more but ultimately it did not matter. The match resumed and Brooksby went on to win the match.
Caroline Wozniacki who is calling the Raducanu match offered her quick opinion when the Tennis Channel showed a replay explaining that it should have been a definite default. The ATP will certainly review the incident.
