ATP Race to Turin: Jannik Sinner holds firm as Tommy Paul breaks into ATP Finals qualification zone

After the first week of Indian Wells and some surprising eliminations, the ATP Race to Turin is beginning to shift. Jannik Sinner remains at the top despite his ongoing suspension and absence from competition, while Tommy Paul has now secured a spot among the top eight.

Meanwhile, the early exits of Alexander Zverev (2nd) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (3rd) could shake things up, especially with Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton closing in. Novak Djokovic’s first-match exit also puts him at risk of a drop in the standings.

Leaders unable to earn more points

The Race - unlike the ATP Rankings - only measures the number of titles won in the calendar year (2025), and defines the qualifiers for the ATP Finals at the end of the season.

Jannik Sinner’s well-known three-month suspension has kept him away from competition, but after winning the Australian Open, his 2,000 points still keep him comfortably at the top of the Race. He is guaranteed to remain No. 1 after Indian Wells concludes.

Only Carlos Alcaraz (4th) has a chance to catch him. With his third-round appearance secured on Monday night, Alcaraz has already reached 1,050 points in the Race. If he wins the title, he could match Sinner’s 2,000 points at the top.

The early exits of Alexander Zverev (1,565 points) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (1,145 points) in the first round leave them unable to add more points, meaning their podium positions could be at risk in the coming days. Closing out the top five is home favourite Ben Shelton, who has comfortably reached the third round. A couple more wins could see him overtake Felix, while a final appearance could even push him past Zverev.

Top 10 set to change as Djokovic and Machac fall early

The Race’s top 10 includes two other players who were eliminated in the second round: Novak Djokovic (7th, 860 points) and Tomas Machac (10th, 795 points). This leaves Alex de Minaur (6th), Tommy Paul (8th), and Denis Shapovalov (9th) as the only top-10 players still in contention.

Paul, in particular, has climbed several positions after reaching the fourth round, capitalising on the early eliminations of those ahead of him. As of Monday, March 10, nine of the current top 15 in the Race have already exited the tournament. Stefanos Tsitsipas (12th), Jack Draper (16th), Francisco Cerúndolo (19th), and Taylor Fritz (20th) are some of the players who could climb higher if they continue their strong runs at Indian Wells.
