The fifth day of action is here at the 2023 Canadian Open with the Quarter-FInal line-up/schedule set in Toronto on the ATP side which unlike the WTA was not beset by rain delays.

Top seed, Carlos Alcaraz is still the leading light involved though and heads into a quarter-final clash with Tommy Paul on Friday evening and leads our preview.

After taking down Hubert Hurkacz, it will be another American for Alcaraz after previously defeating Ben Shelton. That being Tommy Paul.

Paul has had to play since the first round taking down Diego Schwartzman, Francisco Cerundolo and Marcos Giron in the process. But will now face his biggest test so far. In terms of head to head though, it is 1-1 and the telling factor is that their first meeting came this time last year albeit two rounds earlier in Canada which Paul won in three sets. Repeat or revenge?

Also the main story has to be a certain Gael Monfils who after a really poor start to his comeback has joined his wife, Elina Svitolina in producing what he is capable of. He continues to stun and will face Jannik Sinner in the Quarter-Finals.

Sinner will be favourite and holds a 3-1 record against Monfils though albeit most of their matches have come in 2019 and 2021 when the Frenchman was last on the tour. So it will be very much two different players to their head to heads.

The other Quarter-Finals see Daniil Medvedev face off against Alex de Minaur. While two of the big stories of the tournament have been Mackenzie McDonald and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. In particular the latter who has been in thrashing giant killer mode.

He has smashed J.J Wolf, Alexander Zverev and then took down Casper Ruud and will have his sights set on another American in the Quarter-Finals in McDonald.
