Ben Shelton suffered a major upset at the Swiss Indoors Basel, losing to world No. 222 Jérôme Kym in the second round despite entering the tournament as the top seed. The 23-year-old Swiss wildcard claimed a 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(1) victory, securing the biggest win of his career and reaching his first quarter-final at an ATP 500 event.
The defeat ended Shelton's hopes of lifting another trophy in Basel, where he had been among the leading contenders after a successful season. The American had already won four titles in 2026 and reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open, establishing himself as world No. 4.
Shelton had also needed a demanding performance to get through his opening match against Aleksandar Kovacevic, eventually winning 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 after three consecutive tiebreaks. This time, however, he was unable to come through the decisive shootout, with Kym producing his best tennis when the match was on the line.
The result adds to a difficult week for several prominent names in Basel. Novak Djokovic also suffered an early exit, while Flavio Cobolli retired in tears. Kym, meanwhile, became the latest local player to produce a memorable moment in front of the Swiss crowd and will now face Czech eighth seed Jiří Lehečka in the quarter-finals.

Kym stuns Shelton after dramatic deciding-set comeback

The Swiss wildcard made an immediate impression, taking control of the opening set with two breaks of serve. Shelton struggled to create opportunities on return, while Kym maintained his advantage to close out the set 6-3. The American improved in the second, but neither player managed a break, sending the contest into another tiebreak.
Shelton eventually prevailed 7-4 to force a deciding set, but Kym looked to have the match under control after breaking twice to establish a 5-2 lead. The Swiss then had an opportunity to serve for the biggest victory of his career, only for Shelton to respond with a break and quickly turn the momentum around.
The American recovered the deficit, broke again to level at 5-5 and moved ahead 6-5. Kym, however, held his nerve to force another tiebreak, where he delivered a dominant performance. He won the final shootout 7-1, completing a remarkable victory after two hours and 20 minutes of tennis.
The serving statistics highlighted the difference between the two players, particularly on second serve. Kym struck 19 aces compared with Shelton's 17 and won 56% of his second-serve points, while the American managed only 39%. The Swiss also converted four of eight break-point opportunities, compared with two from five for Shelton.

Shelton turns attention to Paris and ATP Finals

The defeat comes at a point in the season when Shelton has already secured his place at the ATP Finals in Turin. The American became the third player to qualify, joining Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz, after reaching the US Open final in September. He will therefore not be under the same pressure as other contenders in the closing weeks of the Race to Turin.
Shelton has two tournaments remaining on his schedule: the Paris Masters, where he is expected to be the third seed, and the season-ending ATP Finals, scheduled for November 15-22. His 2026 campaign has nevertheless already included four titles, with victories in Montreal, Munich, Dallas and Stuttgart, alongside his run to the US Open final.
For Kym, the victory represents a significant breakthrough. Ranked outside the top 200 and competing with a wildcard, he will now have the opportunity to reach his first ATP Tour semi-final when he takes on Lehečka. After eliminating the tournament's top seed, the Swiss will also have the support of the home crowd as he attempts to continue his remarkable Basel run.
