Matteo Berrettini looked very good in his US Open return when he defeated Go Soeda 7-6(5) 6-1 6-4 as did Milos Raonic and both recaped their matches in interviews.
Matteo Berrettini was eager to return to the
US Open and his first match back was a success. His opponent was Soeda and the Japanese player is capable of playing a good match even making a run at grand slams but Matteo prevented that with his composed play. After the match he said:
"I was able to win the most important points in the tie-break. I got a lot of confidence after winning the first set and felt I could change gears. I got a little bit tight in the third set. I haven’t played a lot of matches this year. It wasn’t easy at the end, but mentally I was there and I’m happy with my performance."
And just like Matteo said it looked as if he was stiff at the end of the match which is due to preparation. His major preparations for this event has been the exhibition series held at the Mouratoglou academy who'se intensity pales compared to matches at the grand slam. All in all it was a good return for Matteo who will look better as the event goes on and he finds more time on the court.
Similar to Matteo,
Milos Raonic continued his great run which started last week at the
Western & Southern Open. A dominant display against Mayer was summarised by Raonic:
"I had a great week last week. A lot of good things, especially after such a long layoff, but I knew it was going to be very important for me to separate the two. "I’m happy with how quickly everything has come along. I know that I can play well, especially having the ability to train [while] healthy and prepare the right way. I’m glad the pieces are coming together."
And if Milos continues to play the way he has and if avoids injuries he could be on of the dark horses of this tournament.
