Matteo Berrettini was the MVP for Italy in their clash with Austria giving them two key victories in singles and doubles.
It was just another string of strong performances from the Italian who entered this event having already played competitive tennis in Turkey earlier in the season. It showed as he was much sharper early in the match against Thiem whom he beat in straight sets 6-2 6-4. Speaking on the court following that match he said:
"I'm very happy obviously for myself, but in this competition, we're playing for a team, so it's really nice. I'm really happy with my performance."
Berrettini also expressed satisfaction of playing in the event at all especially after missing it last year because of injury. Reflecting on that he said:
"It was really sad last year [to miss the ATP Cup], unfortunately, I was injured. I saw the atmosphere in all the cities in Australia. It was a great event. This year I wanted to be here. Playing for your country is something special."
It was not all from Matteo that day as he returned in doubles with Fognini to defeat Thiem and Novak giving Italy the key point in their tie. Fognini briefly commented on that match with:
"I think we played a good match for sure. He played amazing in singles. Without his victory, we are not here to discuss our victory in doubles."
