Matteo Berrettini survived a spirited comeback from Gael Monfils to become the first Italian male to reach the semi-finals at the Australian Open.
In an absolute epic, Berrettini took it 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-2 to keep his title hopes alive.
He fired in 50 winners and eased through the decider after Monfils had mounted a spirited fightback. Improving his head to head record to 3-0 against Monfils as a result, he will now face Rafael Nadal who took down Denis Shapovalov earlier today.
He has now reached the semi-finals of 3/4 Grand Slams with his run to the Wimbledon final being his best yet.
He could yet be joined by compatriot, Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals who will face Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday aiming to break further ground.
