Matteo Berrettini saw his post-match on-court interview interrupted by an abusive fan following his
Australian Open quarterfinal win over
Gael Monfils, but the Italian was quick to handle the situation.
The seventh seed battled past Monfils in a five set late-night thriller, with the charismatic Frenchman battling back from two sets to love down to force a decider. Although Berrettini eventually prevailed, a frustrated fan took out his anger on the Italian, shouting expletives in his direction during his post-match on-court interview.
In response, the World No.7 kept his cool and maintained his composure but still shot back at the abusive supporter.
“I didn’t hear,” Berrettini said. “It’s full of people and I like it but some of them are not really tennis fans,
“It is what it is, you can’t control everybody. To be respectful is something you have to do anyway. But it’s fine. I win, I’m happy.”
This is not the only incident involving fans and players at Melbourne Park, with both Andy Murray and Daniil Medvedev complaining about fan reactions during their matches.
