Matteo Berrettini announced himself to the tennis world last year at the
US Open and his ambition in this one are even higher. Today was a great step in that direction as he defeated
Ugo Humbert in straight sets. The match was far from easy as there were not many breaks in this one. Berrettini broke his opponent in the 1st game when both were still adapting to the conditions.
He served very well and maintained the lead to make it 6-4. The 2nd set was similar as both of them served and played well on their own serve with Matteo breaking Humbert only late in the set. It would be enough to win it with 6-4 again. The last set featured more of the same with great serving and almost none break points. We ended up in a a tiebreak which was quite interesting.
Matteo jumped out to an early lead but
Humbert fought back to make it 6-6 saving a match point in the process. However it wasn't enough as Berrettini won two points in a row to make it 8-6 and end the match. It was far from easy as Matteo spent over two hours on the court. It was a good win however as
Matteo posted impressive numbers on both serves winning over 80 % of his 1st serves and close to 70 % of his 2nd serves. He also added 17 aces to that performance.
