The Dubai Tennis event will pay out five times more to the ATP winner compared to the WTA winner and Andy Murray called it out.
Prize money disparity is nothing unusual in the tennis world with the majority of tennis events that host both the ATP and WTA having one. However, the Dubai Tennis Championship has a very noticeable one with the ATP winner getting close to five times more than what Jelena Ostapenko got last week as the WTA winner.
Andy Murray was not aware of that but once notified and asked about it, he said:
"Obviously that's a big step backwards, so it's not great. Obviously, if they're the same size events one week apart, that's quite a big discrepancy."
He further said:
There has been tournaments on the tour, like the Washington event, for example, with the different size events, the prize monies are different. I've also played the tournament in Brisbane for the men, which is a smaller event compared to women, and the prize money is flipped the other way."
