After Gerard Piqué aired his views on a potential change to tennis met the public eye, Boris Becker and Brad Gilbert in particular showed their dismay albeit in a respectful tone to the former Barcelona and Spain football star.
Pique has previously been involved with tennis after an ill fated stint running the Davis Cup with his company Kosmos but it ended sourly. It shows his love for the sport though whether his opinions are warranted or not.
Part of the controversy came with Pique speaking on a podcast with former Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas in which he criticised several aspects of tennis including two serves, lengthy games and advantage points.
He proposed a different alternative which is seeing a decisive point. "Why are there two serves? That's another 30 seconds making the ball bounce. People want to see the point. People don't want to see a 5-minute game that stays indefinitely at 40-40, advantage, etc. Let's set a decisive point," he said.
However tennis fans didn't relay these words very well and neither did Boris Becker or Brad Gilbert. "A very good footballer shouldn’t be discussing the future of tennis ( with all respect @3gerardpique," Becker posted on X.
To which Gilbert then agreed with Becker on the lack of changes needed and staying in his lane in regards to Pique. "Totally agree with you BB, like making soccer changes," Gilbert commented.
