Veus Williams is still playing at the age of 44. But could Taylor Fritz carry the flag for American tennis and do the same as he was queried about it recently giving a firm answer on whether he will have a long tennis career.

At only 27, he realistically has a long time left in the sport before he even considers the thought but with Williams hitting the headlines for nearly playing Indian Wells at 44, he has set his sights on a long career.

“That’d be huge,” he said in an interview Sports Illustrated. “I don’t know how likely that is, but, yeah, I’ll do this as long as I can, long as I feel like I’m good.”

He also described his growth in the sport with improved mental strength and his ability to win with his back against the wall which he said is a big part of his success. He has become one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour and is rarely defeated early in tournaments.

He also finally reached the summit of a Grand Slam losing out to Jannik Sinner at the US Open and has emerged as a major player.

“I think it’s a pretty big difference. I think style-wise, it hasn’t changed too much,” Fritz shared. “But I just think I’m doing everything a little bit better, with a little bit more confidence. I think mentally, I’m much, much stronger.

“When I was younger, my career, like, five years ago, it was a lot more work, and more things I had to do, to play well.

“I don’t know if that’s the best way to describe it, but I feel like I’m working harder and maybe not having as much fun, so that I can do what’s the most enjoyable thing and the most fun thing for me—which is winning and playing those big matches.”
