Former world number one
Boris Becker has expressed
disappointment after Britain’s Emma Raducanu withdrew from the mixed doubles category at Wimbledon. The third Grand Slam of the year is approaching its business end, and the remaining players are showcasing their talent to
secure the ultimate prize.
This year’s Wimbledon was special as it was set to
feature the former world number one
Andy Murray for the last time. The
37-year-old, often regarded as the greatest British player in the
history of men’s tennis in the singles category, has struggled with consistent fitness
struggles throughout his career. For this reason, he announced his retirement from professional tennis in 2018 after the Australian Open but made a stunning return to the court just months later.
Earlier this year, Murray announced that he would like to
retire from professional tennis for the last time as he once again started to
struggle with fitness concerns. That announcement put all the focus on Wimbledon 2024, which has been Murray’s favourite competition, having lifted the title two times.
However, he suffered a massive blow in pursuing his plans with
an injury during the Queen’s ATP Championship which forced him to withdraw from
the singles category. After withdrawing from the singles category, Murray
announced that he would take part in the men’s doubles category with his brother
Jamie and in the mixed doubles category with Raducanu.
While his men’s doubles journey was short lived as he and
his brother lost to Australia’s pair of John Peers and Rinky Hijikata in
straight sets, the double’s event did not go ahead as planned. The reason was
that Raducanu decided to withdraw from the category because of a wrist injury.
Becker, in a post on his official account on the social
media platform X — previously known as Twitter — expressed disappointment about
the development. “Why don’t you asked Andy or Judy, how they feel about this…@Wimbledon,”
he wrote.
