The 2022 winner of the
San Diego Open is
Brandon Nakashima who defeated Marcos Giron 6-4 6-4 in the final.
The American youngster has played a solid season so far but it finally clicked for him in his native San Diego as he followed up each win with an even better performance. The final itself was just the perfect mix of a couple of things going right for him.
Nakashima was quite impressive in the first set serving really well and dropping only a handful of points behind it. He did not face a single break point and converted the first he had to break Giron once and win it 6-4.
The second set was far more competitive as we saw Nakashima jump out to an early lead but lose it fairly quickly. He broke Giron once more and calmly pressed on to finish the match with a 6-4 second set score. After the match, Nakashima said:
"It feels like a dream out here. My first ATP title in my hometown. To be able to capture my first title here, it's unbelievable. Amazing atmosphere out here tonight, and I just really want to say thank you for coming out and showing your support."
