John McEnroe finally led his team to a win as the Team Captain is overjoyed with the hard-fought victory for Team World.
Winning the
Laver Cup was a tall order for Team World as they were trailing 8-4 heading into the final day. Four matches were planned with each victory worth three points. Sock and Auger-Alissime pulled out the doubles match against Murray and Berrettini and then we saw some heroics from Felix to stun Djokovic.
After that, it was Tsitsipas' time to save Team Europe and he looked on his way to do so but Frances Tiafoe saved four match points to win the match and elevate Team World to their first Laver Cup triumph in their 5th try.
McEnroe was more than happy:
"I’d say that amazing would be an understatement right now, it’s been a long time and we’ve been beat up a few times but we’ve been so close we could taste it. You know I didn’t really need to fire them up a whole lot as you pointed out we lost the first four so we were sick of, you know...my brother said it aptly, no one beats Team World five years in a row."
He added:
“Frances [Tiafoe] is prime time, he loves this stuff, we saw that at the US Open. Stefanos [Tsitsipas] came out guns blazing, was playing incredible and he had to step up and he did. This is a great young group of guys we’ve got here, we kept battling, it looked like we were in trouble."
And concluded with:
“This is an incredible team event, I cherish it. I got one more year to go and it’s going to be incredible. I’m loving every second right now everybody.”
