Cam Norrie kept British hopes alive for a spot in the
Davis Cup quarterfinal after a strong performance and win over Jiri Lehecka 6-1 2-6 6-1.
It was a very interesting match between Norrie and Lehecka with a scoreline that is not quite typical for ATP Tennis. More importantly for Great Britain, they are 1-1 with Czech Republcih heading into the doubles where the British duo of Skupski and Salisbury should have the advantage. With a win, the Brits will qualify for the quarterfinals which is the goal.
Norrie came out focused in this match understanding the importance of the match. Evans lost to Machac which meant that Norrie had to win and he played like it. He took an early break in the first 2-0 after which he kept applying pressure to his opponent. Lehecka was a bit nervous and it showed in longer rallies which Norrie won most of the time.
6-1 was the score of the first set with Lehecka coming out much stronger in the 2nd. The Czech player went all out blasting from the baseline and Norrie was unable to handle it. Lehecka took an early break and he kept piling on after that with Norrie conceding the set 2-6 in the end. A great set of tennis from Lehecka but he could not keep it up.
After a lengthy game where Norrie had break points and Lehecka had game balls it was Norrie who won it. That gave him the 2-0 lead and from there he cruised finishing off his opponent with 6-1. A great win for Norrie who is 2-0 so far at the Davis Cup proving to be the true British number one.
