Jimmy Connors expressed his confidence in
Taylor Fritz
to achieve higher goals.
The former tennis player spoke about his compatriot
Taylor Fritz and expressed that he hopes to see the world No. 5 setting higher
goals. In the "Advantage Connors" podcast he does with his son, they
talked about the opportunity to have an American tennis player back in the top-5,
something that hadn't happened since Andy Roddick in 2009. Fritz has just won
the
Delray Beach Open, and Connors praised the 25-year-old player.
"It's a huge confidence builder for him to know
that he is the first American in the top 5 since Roddick," said the 8-time
Grand Slam champion.
"Now keep that roll going and keep going out and
keep grinding and working on your game.”
According to Connors, Fritz's next goals should be to
continue climbing in the ATP rankings and aspire to win Grand Slam titles:
“Can't rest on your laurels," added the North
American.
The former world No. 1 gave advice to Fritz based on
his own experience on the tour:
"You broke into the top 5, what's it going to
take to get to 3 or 2 or 1 or win a Grand Slam?"
"My whole year was geared toward what was it
going to take to be mentally and physically to go into the US Open with one
thing on my mind and that was winning."
