Carlos Alcaraz end's Lleyton Hewitt's 21-year record as youngest ever year-ending World No.1

Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz has been having a season to remember this year, and the 19-year old just added another distinction to his young career.

After winning breaking into the Top 10 rankings, winning his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Miami and subsequently following it up with his first Grand Slam trophy at the US Open, Alcaraz rose to a new career-high ranking of World No.1.

The Murcia native has achieved another milestone, one that has been set in the record books for over two decades. Alcaraz finished the 2022 season as the World No.1, and at age 19 became the youngest ever player to do so since Australian Lleyton Hewitt accomplished the same feat in 2001.

During that remarkable year, Hewitt also won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, defeating four-time champion Pete Sampras in the process. Furthermore, the Aussie would go on to capture the year-ending Masters cup trophy, cementing his position as the World No.1 at the end of the season.

However, Alcaraz would withdraw from the 2022 ATP Finals shortly before the event, citing an abdominal injury picked up during the Paris Masters.
