Carlos Alcaraz will not be able to compete in his first final of the 2024 season. The Spanish player has fallen in the semifinals of the Argentina Open against Nicolás Jarry, who made life difficult for the Spaniard, barely giving him any break opportunities, and ultimately eliminated him in two sets: 6(2)-7, 3-6.
In the first set, Alcaraz began the match with a service game that should have boosted his confidence regarding his serve to qualify for the final. He repeated this with his next service to lead 2-1, aware that he had to continue this way if he didn't want to start struggling early against a patient Jarry.
Nicolás Jarry had his serve as one of his main weapons, but while Carlos Alcaraz couldn't trouble the Chilean's serve, Jarry also couldn't put pressure on the Spaniard's. Consequently, the first set would go to a tiebreak after not a single break opportunity throughout the set.
In the tiebreak, Alcaraz faced a delicate moment. After losing three of his first four serves in the tiebreak, Nicolás Jarry led 1-4, putting him on the path to victory in the first set. Jarry would win his next two serves to go up 1-6 and have five set points. On the second opportunity, Jarry took the lead, closing the tiebreak at 2-7.
In the second set, the initial story would be very different regarding the solidity of the two players with their serves. Right from the start, Alcaraz managed to break Jarry's serve to take a 1-0 lead, but immediately surrendered his own, wasting a golden opportunity. However, after the chaos, the sequence of games returned with hardly any break opportunities.
However, at the worst possible moment for Carlos Alcaraz, Nicolás Jarry would manage to inflict damage on the Spaniard with a 3-4 lead. The Chilean secured a decisive break to go up 3-5 and with the chance to serve for the match and seal his place in the final. He succeeded, and Alcaraz bid farewell to the Argentina Open 2024
