Nicolas
Jarry has reached the top 20, becoming the second member of his family to
achieve this milestone, matching his grandfather Jaime Fillol.
The Chilean
is having the best season of his career in 2023, establishing himself as one of
the most consistent players in the ATP Ranking. He achieved this through a
steady ascent, thanks to his titles at ATP 250 Geneva and Santiago Open.
Notably,
the tournament in his hometown provided a significant boost at the beginning of
the year, playing in front of his home crowd in an event organized by his own
family. His aunt, Catalina Fillol, serves as the director of the tournament, as
his family has a deep-rooted history in tennis.
Jarry is
the grandson of Jaime Fillol, who was one of the leading Latin American tennis
players in the 1970s. He won eight singles titles, 16 doubles titles, reached
the finals of the Roland Garros in 1975 in both men's doubles and mixed
doubles, and was part of the Davis Cup finals in 1976.
With the
latest ATP ranking update on Monday,
Nicolas Jarry reached world No. 20,
becoming the second top-20 player in his family, as his grandfather reached
world No. 14 in early 1974. Another family member, Alvaro Fillol, was also a
tennis player, although he only reached world No. 106.
This year,
Nicolas Jarry not only clinched two titles but also made it to the semifinals
of the ATP 500 Rio Open (where he was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz). Jarry
recorded eight victories and four losses in Grand Slam events, achieving his
best result at the French Open, where he reached the fourth round before
falling to Casper Ruud.
His recent
performance at the Masters 1000 Shanghai Open, where he reached the
quarterfinals but lost to Grigor Dimitrov, paved the way for him to achieve his
career-best ranking.
On October
24, he will make his debut at the Swiss Indoors Open against world No. 24
Adrian Mannarino, with no prior matchups recorded between them.
