Carlos Alcaraz did not have a very good stay in Astana as the Spaniard lost to David Goffin in a pretty convincing fashion 5-7 3-6.
The Spaniard is playing his first singles event since becoming the world number one and it didn't go so well. He had hope of doing well at this event but he put forward a pretty lacklustre performance against a very strong Goffin who was playing great.
The Spaniard never lost in straight sets in all 62 matches he played this year but this time he this time around he wasn't able to. The match started with a lot of excitement on both sides. Goffin saved multiple break points in his first game as did Alcaraz. The players then traded breaks but eventually, Goffin pulled ahead 4-2.
He failed to serve out the match as Alcaraz battled back to 5-5 but he still won the set 7-5. He opened the second set with an early break taking a 3-0 lead and he nearly made it 4-0. Goffin did get the double break taking a 5-1 lead but failed to serve out the match.
He did eventually 6-3 for the huge upset.

Lucky loser David Goffin, who lost to 19yo Luca Nardi in the qualifying and replaced 19yo Holger Rune in the MD, beats 19yo Carlos Alcaraz, no less than the ATP #1, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the R2 in Astana. That's the 1st straight sets loss of the year for Alcaraz. In 63 (!) matches.
