Carlos Alcaraz avenged his Indian Wells loss to Andy Murray by defeating the Brit in straight sets at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
Carlos Alcaraz and Andy Murray played a brilliant match in the California desert not long ago and they did so again in Vienna. This match was perhaps even more impressive, especially from the Spaniard who arguably never lost control of the match. The start of it was very intense with the Spaniard taking an early 2-0 lead. Murray fought back to make it 2-2 and by that time they were already playing 35 minutes.
The fierce fight continued in the next few games with Alcaraz once again pulling ahead. The Spanish player was creating a lot of havoc with his tremendous forehand who was firing on all cylinders. Eventually, Alcaraz was able to serve out the set with 6-3 after 65 minutes of unbelievable play by both.
Murray struggled with his fitness at times as well as some of the rallies were very long with Murray having to run cross-court a lot of times. His tiredness was pretty evident early on in the 2nd set where he took longer breaks than usual. Even so, he was able to take a 3-1 lead after some cheap mistakes by Alcaraz. That injected some confidence in Murray who started showing more energy.
It was all good until 4-2 and Murray looked rather comfortable in holding the lead however it was Alcaraz who then took over, quite literally. The Spaniard started blasting away from the forehand and cracks in Murray's game started showing. First, he pulled back the break to make it 4-4 before stringing together two more games to close it out with 6-4.
