Carlos Alcaraz did what many thought he would do by reaching the Hamburg European Open final and it comes after he beat Alex Molcan 7-6(2) 6-1.
The Spaniard started slowly in this event before catching fire against Karen Khachavno in the previous round and his good play continued today. It was not as impressive as against Khachanov but it was a pretty good match from Alcaraz, especially when his opponent fell apart in the 2nd set. The first set was a very interesting one.
Both started well and neither was able to take a break off the other. Eventually, Alcaraz found a way and he took a 4-2 lead but lost the break in the next game. He broke again and lost it again during a crazy sequence where we saw four consecutive breaks. Molcan had to save set points at 4-5 but he was able to battle through a hold until the tiebreak.
It was the last good thing he would do as Alcaraz absolutely dominated him in the tiebreak winning 7-2. The 2nd set was a continuation of that domination as the Spaniard blasted winners from all angles. Not know how to counter that Molcan kept up attacking but we saw a spree of errors as he bowed out with a 1-6 2nd set finish.
