One week after losing against Nicolas Jarry in Geneva, Casper Ruud managed to get his revenge by beating the Chilean in 7-6(3) 7-5 7-5 to book the Roland Garros (French Open) quarter-finals.
The Norwegian played in the final last year so a deep run in Paris is nothing he doesn't know about. He managed to play a really balanced match learning from his experience last week. It was a really close match even though it started really well for Ruud as he took an early 3-0 lead. It was 3-3 not long after that with the first set finishing in the tiebreak.
Jarry was generally the more aggressive player in the match as he looked to win points. It worked for him in Geneva but conditions there play quicker than in Paris which played a part in that. It was a 7-3 finish for Ruud who proved a bit more stable when it mattered the most. Too many mistakes from Jarry.
The second set was Jarry's big chance as he took a 4-1 lead early getting pretty close to winning the set. Unfortunately, he allowed Ruud to battle back and then he lost a couple of games in a row to completely lose the set 5-7. Terrible finish from Jarry after a promising start but again too many errors down the stretch.
The final set was again eerily similar to that. Jarry once again the lead 4-2 but ocne again he fall apart towards the end. Both players played well but Ruud was again a bit more stable. He knew how to navigate those close rallies towards teh end of the amtch and proved less erratic. Sometimes that is just enough but Jarry wasted plenty of chances in this one.
