Aryna Sabalenka joined Eurosport exclusively to talk about her performance in the first women's night shift match of this year's Roland Garros (French Open) which was a bit controversial.
It was mostly controversial because a lot of people tried to resell their tickets when it became apparent that it would be Sabalenka against Stephens and not Alcaraz against Musetti. Sabalenka was asked about that and she admitted that there was a bit of fear that there weren't going to be any spectators however that proved wrong as there were plenty.
"I just saw a couple of days that people didn't like that they put a woman's match at night, so I wasn't sure what's going to happen. I thought people will not come to watch us play. I was surprised there was a lot of people and they were going crazy. I think, and I hope, that they enjoyed our match and they will ask her for women’s matches at night.”
She also talked about the match which was quite interesting as it seemed like a short considering how dominantly she started off but in the end, it proved very competitive with Stephens missing out on a big chance in the second set.
“I am super happy with this win especially against such a tough opponent. Yeah, the first set was a little bit crazy. I think it was a nightmare! I don't know, it was something unbelievable. I mean, she played unbelievable tennis, came back from that score. “I don’t know, I think I just got a little bit lucky in the first set and it's gave me so much belief and so much power for the second set.”
A good win for the Belarusian who is looking like a favourite to go deep alongside a few other players like Iga Swiatek. She's one of a handful of players to actually beat her this year.
