Cameron Norrie played a very good first match at the ATP Finals but ultimately it was Norwegian
Casper Ruud who prevailed in three sets.
The start to the match was fabulous by Cameron Norrie who caught Ruud off guard with his style of play. The Norwegian faced Norrie earlier in the year at the San Diego Open and thrashed him rather easily. This time around it was Norrie who had the early advantage playing much better and more focused. Ruud was committing far too many errors early and Norrie took a 5-1 lead.
He finished off the set with 6-1 and continued playing great in the 2nd. Ruud started off better as well but Norrie was still applying pressure early. The Norwegian had to labor a lot more in order to win his service games than Norrie did but over time that gave him confidence. He looked sharper and sharper at 4-3 Norrie played his worst game of the match.
Ruud broke him easily after several errors by the Brit to take a 5-3 lead after which he finished off the 2nd set with 6-3. Norrie found some balance early in the 3rd with a confident service game but Ruud was already firing on all cylinders. Playing very aggressively, especially when presented with a 2nd serve he was able to get an early break.
Ruud applied pressure and almost got a double break but Norrie was able to hold. However it was Ruud who proved calmer in the end cruising to a 6-4 final set finish. A great mach by both but Ruud proved he was the better player at this stage in their careers.
