Casper Ruud is out of the
Monte-Carlo Masters as the Norwegian was beaten by qualifier
Jan-Lennard Struff who was the better player overall 6-1 7-6(6).
It was a very interesting match between Ruud and Struff, especially in the second set where the German nearly choked. The first set was an utter beatdown by Struff who put massive pressure on Ruud with his serving and his volleying. He also attacked the serve of Ruud early in rallies producing a lot of trouble.
6-1 was the final score in the first set for Struff as he had 11 winners and only 3 errors in that one. Ruud was out of sync for much of that set and he continued to struggle in the second set falling behind 5-2. In the next game, Struff had a chance to close it out but he proved a bit nervous opening up the game with 0-40. He would make it 40-40 and create two match points but didn't use them and got broken.
That made Struff even more nervous as he started to rush in rallies producing quite a bit of errors. Ruud was able to battle all the way back with another break and force a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, it was the German who ultimately prevailed 8-6 after a pretty decent battle. Just not a very good match from Ruud and a really strong one from Struff.
