Casper Ruud became a 2x
Argentina Open champion after taking down last year's champion and fan favourite
Diego Schwartzman.
The victory came after a stunning comeback win that saw Ruud easily best Schwartzman in the 2nd and 3rd set after dropping a very close first set. Schwartzman lifted the trophy last year and it was a festival of celebration as a native Argentinian raised the trophy. The dream was alive this year as well but Ruud was simply too good.
The first set was a very close and entertaining one. For the most part, Ruud was the better player and Schwartzman had to save break points a few times in the set. Ruud only had issues in one service game but he was able to hang on. After saving a set point at 5-4 Schwartzman went on to win the next two games and close the first set with 7-5.
In the 2nd set, Ruud completely outplayed his opponent exploiting both his first serve and 2nd serve. Ruud was simply locked in and focused and smashed Schwartzman rather easily with 6-2. He actually won six games in a row at a point as he took an early 2-0 lead in the 3rd set. Schwartzman battled back to make it 2-1 but lost his serve once more to make it 3-1.
Ruud had a chance to make it 5-1 but Schwartzman held on and kept hope alive but the Norwegian was clinical in finishing off the job. The Norwegian wins another title on clay and strengthens his ATP Rankings position.
